Git Plugin

What does it do?

Install from a URL

Accepts https://host/owner/repo, ssh://git@host:port/owner/repo.git, git@host:owner/repo.git and plain owner/repo for GitHub.

Five hosts

GitHub, GitLab (including nested groups), Bitbucket and self-hosted Gitea or Forgejo.

Updates from the branch

Plugins installed from Git are checked against the branch they came from. A pinned tag never moves, so it never updates.

Private repositories

An access token is used for that one download and never stored. Private installs are not update-checked.

No wordpress.org collisions

A same-named plugin on wordpress.org never overwrites one installed from Git, and View details shows the right one.

Check for updates now

A button on the Plugins screen drops the release cache and re-runs the update check instead of waiting up to 12 hours.

Download as zip

Zip any installed plugin with its folder as the top level, ready to upload elsewhere as-is.

Replace or keep

Installing over an existing plugin shows the same Replace current with uploaded choice as a manual upload.

First five minutes

What do I do right after activating?

A first result before you read anything else.

1. Open Git Plugin

In your WordPress admin, open Plugins and click Git Plugin.

2. Paste a repository URL

Paste a URL, for example the Kira Page Builder repository shown under Install further down, and click Install. Leave the branch empty to get the default branch.

3. Activate

Click Activate on the install screen. The plugin now appears on the Plugins list like any other.

4. Check for updates

On the Plugins screen, click Check for updates now. New versions show up under Dashboard → Updates.

How it works

How does a URL become an installed plugin?

Git Plugin never shells out to git. It downloads the host's archive of the branch and hands it to the WordPress installer. It is how every other Web9 plugin is installed and updated.

1. Parse

The URL is parsed into host, owner, repo and ref. The web base is worked out from SSH forms too.

2. Download

The host's archive endpoint for that ref is fetched, with the token as a header when one is given.

3. Install

The archive unpacks as repo-main and is moved to the repo's name, so the folder stays stable across updates.

4. Track

The repo and ref are saved. The main file's Version header on that branch is compared on each update check.

Install

How do I install it?

Two routes. Either one takes about a minute: a download, an upload and a click on Activate.

With Git Plugin

In your WordPress admin, open Plugins, click Git Plugin, paste the repository URL and click Install, then Activate.

https://github.com/camachopedro3/git-plugin

Get Git Plugin

Upload the zip

Download the zip, then in Plugins click Add New Plugin, then Upload Plugin. Choose the zip, click Install Now, then Activate.

What does it need?

  • WordPress 5.8 or newer
  • PHP 7.4 or newer
  • The install_plugins capability
  • Private repositories install with a token but are not update-checked

How do I update it?

Git Plugin checks its repository for a newer release tag. A new version shows up under Dashboard → Updates next to your other plugins; click Update. If you uploaded the zip by hand, install Git Plugin to get the same update checks.

Is it really free?

GPLv2 or later, public repository, no paid tier, no license keys, no account. Use it on as many sites as you like, yours or your clients'.
